*Underbelly's Market & Rides Manager page currently gives the end point as "Early January 2026", despite the role starting in October 2026. That appears to be a year error in the listing, so check the live vacancy before relying on the end date.

The jobs ranked by how often you will talk about them afterwards

The pay table is the useful part. The job titles, however, are not all equally good answers to "what did you do over Christmas?"

1. Marshmallow toasting

Yes, this is a real paid job.

Underbelly is hiring concessions staff specifically to work around the marshmallow-toasting fire pits at Skate St George's. The advertised rate is £13.45 an hour plus holiday pay, with work listed from 19 November to 4 January.

The vacancy includes taking payments, keeping the fire-pit area stocked and clean, following food-hygiene procedures and working outside or semi-outside through winter.

It is customer service with a very specific answer when somebody asks what your Christmas job was.

2. Ice rink marshal

This one requires something more concrete than enthusiasm: you need to be a confident and competent ice skater.

Marshals work on and around the rink, help less confident skaters, respond to falls, manage movement on and off the ice and assist with skate hire. The advertised rate is £13.45 an hour.

If you can skate properly, it is one of the more unusual seasonal jobs in the city centre. If your skating peaks at gripping the barrier while pretending everything is fine, this is probably not the application to bluff.

3. Christmas Tree Maze front of house

The maze role pays £13.45 an hour and covers admissions, ticket checks, queues, capacity, visitor questions and safety inside the Christmas Tree Maze.

It also involves helping children and vulnerable visitors where required, reporting hazards and supporting evacuation procedures.

Less time behind a till, more time explaining to somebody that the exit is not where they thought it was.

4. Market & Rides Manager

At £180 a day on a freelance basis, this is one of the higher-paying listings.

The job covers the market traders and third-party ride operators, including safety checks, deliveries, presentation, compliance and day-to-day problems across the site. It is aimed at someone with events or operational experience rather than someone looking for a first Christmas job.

5. Bar staff

Bar staff are advertised at £13.45 an hour. Duties include serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, EPOS payments, stock, Challenge 25 procedures and keeping the bars running during peak trading.

It is also probably the role most likely to put you between a queue for mulled wine and a December stag do wearing matching Christmas jumpers.

The better-paid management jobs

The highest advertised daily rate is the Site Manager role at £240 a day.

This is not a seasonal casual job dressed up with a managerial title. Underbelly is asking for previous site or venue management experience, knowledge of health and fire safety, staff leadership, conflict management and practical maintenance skills.

The Site Manager is the responsible person on site during public opening and parts of the build and break period. The job includes crowd management, emergency decisions, opening and closing the site, coordinating security and cleaning, and dealing with operational issues across the event.

The Attractions Manager is advertised at £16 an hour plus holiday pay, with a full-time workload of around 40 to 48 hours a week once the event is running. It covers the ice rink and Christmas maze, including staff, safety, ice maintenance and customer operations.

The Bar Manager pays £770 a week plus holiday pay for 48 hours over six days. The Bar Duty Manager pays £15 an hour plus holiday pay, with 40 to 48 hours over six days listed on the vacancy page.

The Stock Manager is advertised at £650 a week plus holiday pay for five days a week.

Those hours are a useful reminder that the headline weekly figures are attached to substantial seasonal workloads.

Could the casual roles work for students or extra Christmas money?

Potentially, but the useful calculation is hours, not the length of the contract.

The main casual rate is £13.45 an hour. Underbelly does not promise every applicant a fixed number of weekly hours on the role pages, so it would be misleading to multiply the hourly rate by the entire seven-week period and present that as expected earnings.

A more useful example:

Fourteen eight-hour shifts at £13.45 an hour would pay £1,506.40 before tax.

That is 112 hours of work spread across the season. If you worked 20 eight-hour shifts at the same rate, the gross figure would be £2,152.

Those are examples, not guaranteed earnings. Your actual pay would depend on the role, contracted hours, rota and any holiday pay stated in the vacancy.

For students, the dates are useful because several casual roles run from 19 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, covering much of the Christmas period. Availability requirements on the listings include evenings, weekends and the busy Christmas and New Year period, so check your university timetable and travel plans before committing.

What Skate St George's is

Skate St George's is Underbelly's new event on St George's Plateau in the city centre, directly outside St George's Hall.

The public event runs from Saturday 21 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, with standard opening hours of 10am to 10pm. It includes an outdoor ice rink, Christmas market, rooftop bar, Big Wheel, Christmas Tree Maze and Carousel.

The jobs start before the public opening because the site has to be built, stocked, tested and staffed before visitors arrive. Some management roles continue after 3 January for breakdown and close-down work.

Liverpool Lime Street station is directly opposite the site. Liverpool Central is around a ten-minute walk away and Queen Square bus station is around five minutes away, according to the official Skate St George's site.

Who is Underbelly?

Underbelly began at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2000 and has since developed a large live entertainment and events operation.

Its current portfolio includes Skate Leicester Square, theatre productions and festival work, while its careers operation is recruiting seasonal teams across Liverpool and London for winter 2026/27.

For Liverpool, the company is operating Skate St George's for the 2026 Christmas season.

Before you apply

Read the individual vacancy rather than applying from the job title alone.

The roles have different requirements. Ice rink marshals need to be competent skaters. Site management requires substantial operational experience. Bar roles involve licensing and Challenge 25 responsibilities. Several public-facing jobs require applicants to be comfortable working outdoors in winter and available for evenings, weekends and the Christmas and New Year period.

The initial Liverpool vacancies were listed with an application deadline of 12pm on Monday 5 October 2026 when checked by L1Local on 2 October.

Applications are through Underbelly's recruitment system:
