Liverpool City Council offers a free bulky item collection for residents who need to dispose of furniture, mattresses, white goods and other large household items.

A single booking can include up to five bulky items. You can also add up to five small electrical items and five bags of textiles, but only alongside a booked bulky-item collection. The service is for private residential properties within Liverpool and is not a house-clearance or commercial-waste service.

The short version

  • Cost: Free for Liverpool residents at private domestic properties.
  • Item limit: Up to five bulky items per booking. A computer, monitor and printer count together as one item.
  • Allowed extras: Up to five small electrical items (toasters, kettles, hairdryers) and up to five bags of clothes/textiles on an active booking.
  • Timing: Collections take place between 7.30am and 4.30pm on your allocated date.
  • Placement: Outside your property, accessible, clearly visible and kept dry. Alleyways must not be blocked.
  • Not accepted: Renovation or builders' waste, bathrooms, kitchen worktops, gas bottles, hazardous waste, landlords or house clearances.

How to book a bulky waste collection in Liverpool

Bookings are made online through Liverpool City Council's bulky item collection service.

The collection date offered depends on when council crews are next scheduled to operate in your ward. The council does not operate a single fixed day across all of Liverpool because vehicle availability varies by neighbourhood.

Before confirming your slot, review the council's bulky collection terms and conditions. They cover essential access, safety and preparation rules that dictate whether crews can collect your items on the day.

How many items can you put out?

The standard allowance is five bulky items per domestic property per collection.

Alongside those five bulky items, you can also include:

  • Up to five small electrical items (such as toasters, kettles, irons and hairdryers).
  • Up to five bags of textiles (including clean clothes, pairs of shoes, belts and handbags).

These electricals and textiles are supplemental extras. You cannot book a standalone collection solely for a toaster or bags of clothing: they must accompany an eligible large bulky item.

The council explicitly treats a desktop computer, monitor and printer as one item. However, it does not treat all multi-piece furniture sets as single items. If your booking is close to the five-item limit, itemise individual dining chairs or modular units separately when submitting your request.

Furniture Liverpool City Council will collect

The council's accepted furniture list includes:

  • Sofas and armchairs
  • Wardrobes (excluding sliding-door wardrobes)
  • Chests of drawers and sideboards
  • Tables and chairs
  • Coffee tables and display cabinets
  • Free-standing dining sets
  • Bed frames and mattresses
  • Cots, high chairs and prams
  • Garden furniture

Bed frames and large dining tables should be dismantled before collection where possible. Glass panels in display cabinets or tables must be secured with tape and must not be broken.

Appliances and electrical items the council will collect

Accepted major domestic appliances include:

  • Fridges and freezers
  • Cookers, ovens and microwaves
  • Dishwashers and washing machines
  • Tumble dryers
  • Televisions and monitors
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Computers and printers

Range cookers are excluded from kerbside collections. All fridges and freezers must be completely defrosted, emptied of food and cleaned before collection day. American-style double fridge-freezers must be placed outside on ground level.

Bikes, leisure and other equipment

The service also accepts bicycles, ordinary home exercise equipment, electric scooters (with the lithium battery removed first), and internal wooden doors.

Similar leisure items are excluded: trampolines, garden swing sets, basketball hoops, pool tables, snooker tables and air-hockey tables are not accepted by the collection crew.

What Liverpool City Council will not take

Crews will refuse items that fall outside the domestic bulky remit, including:

Items excluded from Liverpool City Council bulky waste collection
CategoryExcluded Materials
Building & Renovation Baths, toilets, sinks, shower screens, kitchen worktops, tiles, plasterboard, external doors, windows, sheds and rubble.
Hazardous & Garden Car batteries, gas bottles, paint, chemicals, hazardous liquids, soil and loose garden waste.
Leisure & Heavy Items Pianos, trampolines, swing sets, sunbeds, Wendy houses, pool/snooker tables and commercial gym rigs.
Commercial & Other Loose bags of general rubbish, sliding wardrobes, commercial trade waste and full house clearances.

If you are renovating a home, do not use the bulky service to dispose of bathroom suites, worktops or building rubble. These materials must be taken to a recycling centre or disposed of via a private skip.

Where to leave items and alleyway access

Items should be placed outside your property boundary by 7.30am on collection day, clearly visible from the front street and without blocking the pavement.

Liverpool has hundreds of terraced streets served by gated alleyways. Council collection crews do not carry alleygate keys. If your items are stored in a rear yard accessed via an alleygate, you must unlock the gate on the morning of collection or arrange access. Do not leave booked items in the shared alleyway or on the public road.

Can the crew collect from inside your home?

The standard service is an external, kerbside collection. Access from inside the property can be considered in specific circumstances, such as where leaving items outside would completely block a narrow pavement or where a resident has mobility difficulties.

The council asks residents who need assistance to check whether family, friends or neighbours can help move items outside first. If internal access is requested, the crew will assess whether removal can be carried out safely without risk of injury or property damage. For multi-occupancy flats, each individual flat must make its own separate booking.

Keep mattresses, sofas and carpets dry

Do not place absorbent furniture outside days in advance if wet weather is forecast. Waterlogged mattresses and sofas can double in weight and become unsafe for crews to lift, leading to collection refusal.

Upholstered items should be stored upright where possible and kept covered with a waterproof sheet until the morning of collection. Carpets and laminate flooring must be rolled, tied securely and stored dry.

Torn sofas, foam and POPs regulations

If an upholstered sofa, armchair or cushioned chair has torn fabric, leather or exposed foam, council rules require the damaged area to be taped over or wrapped in plastic sheeting before collection.

This requirement complies with Environment Agency regulations on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Older domestic seating often contains flame-retardant chemicals that require specialised handling and high-temperature incineration to prevent environmental contamination.

Donating usable furniture across Merseyside

If your unwanted furniture or appliances are in good, clean and working condition, donating them keeps quality items in use and supports local charitable programmes:

Using Liverpool Household Waste Recycling Centres

If your items cannot wait for a council booking date or are on the excluded materials list, you can take them directly to one of Liverpool's two household waste recycling centres operated by the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA):

  • Old Swan HWRC: Cheadle Avenue, Old Swan, L13 3AF. Includes pedestrian access.
  • Otterspool HWRC: Jericho Lane, Aigburth, L17 5AR. Vehicle access only.

Both centres open 8am to 8pm during summer (1 April to 30 September) and 8am to 5pm in winter (1 October to 31 March). Standard cars do not require an appointment. Commercial-type vans, pick-ups and large trailers require a free MRWA vehicle permit.
