Sunday 25 October is the day to watch on Merseyrail. No Northern or Wirral Line trains will reach Liverpool city-centre stations that day. Rail replacement buses will serve Moorfields or Sandhills, depending on your route. Friday 23 and Saturday 24 also have the ongoing Hunts Cross closure, while River of Light shuts sections of Dale Street and Water Street each evening.

The Mersey Ferry's weekend status is not confirmed. As of 20 October, the operator says services are suspended on 20 and 21 October and has not announced a return date. Anyone planning to travel from Wirral for River of Light should check a fresh update rather than assume either that sailings have resumed or that they will remain suspended.

These are the published arrangements for Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October 2026, checked against Merseyrail, Mersey Ferries, Liverpool City Council and GOV.UK on 20 October. They are planned changes, not a live departure board.

Weekend transport: what changes by day

  • Friday 23 and Saturday 24: Hunts Cross to Moorfields replacement buses. Northern Line trains from the north still run into Liverpool Central.
  • Sunday 25: Northern Line trains terminate at Sandhills. Wirral Line trains terminate at Birkenhead North or Rock Ferry. Replacement buses cover the affected sections to Moorfields.
  • Every evening 23–25: River of Light road closures from 5pm to 9pm on Dale Street, Water Street and connecting roads.
  • Ferry: suspended for 20–21 October according to the latest dated notice; weekend service unconfirmed.
  • Clocks: back one hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October.

Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October: south Liverpool replacement buses

The Northern Line section between Hunts Cross and Liverpool Central is closed for tunnel waterproofing and power-system work until Friday 6 November. On Friday and Saturday, replacement buses operate between Hunts Cross and Moorfields; they do not stop at Liverpool Central. This affects travel from Hunts Cross, Liverpool South Parkway, Cressington, Aigburth, St Michaels and Brunswick.

Trains still run from Southport, Ormskirk and Headbolt Lane into Liverpool Central on these two days, although Merseyrail says some times are amended. Wirral Line services are not subject to the additional Sunday 25 route limits on Friday or Saturday. Check the Merseyrail tunnel works page and journey planner for the relevant departure.

Anyone going to River of Light, the Duran Duran concert on Friday or the UK Drum Show at King's Dock should leave time to walk from the actual bus stop. A replacement bus is not a like-for-like journey to Liverpool Central.

Sunday 25 October: no Merseyrail trains into Liverpool city centre

This is a bigger change than the Friday and Saturday timetable. The Southport, Ormskirk and Headbolt Lane Northern Line trains run only as far as Sandhills. There are replacement buses between Hunts Cross and Sandhills rather than between Hunts Cross and Moorfields.

The Wirral Line is also affected. The official plan is:

  • From Chester and Ellesmere Port: trains finish at Rock Ferry, then replacement buses operate between Rock Ferry and Moorfields.
  • From West Kirby and New Brighton: trains finish at Birkenhead North, then replacement buses operate between Birkenhead North and Moorfields.
  • City-centre stations: there are no Merseyrail train services into James Street, Moorfields, Lime Street underground or Liverpool Central on Sunday 25 October. Moorfields remains a bus replacement destination.

Merseyrail provides station-by-station replacement bus stop maps. Check the pick-up location at your station rather than assuming the bus leaves from the railway entrance. Tickets bought for the affected Merseyrail train journey are accepted on replacement buses. For Tap & Go, Merseyrail asks passengers to tap in and, where possible, tap out at station validators, or correct missing taps through MetroSmart.

Accessibility: do not rely on a standard train-only journey on Sunday. The operator publishes replacement bus information and station-specific pick-up points; check accessibility and assistance for your exact journey before leaving.

Mersey Ferries: suspension confirmed only through 21 October so far

The official Mersey Ferries service notice checked on Tuesday 20 October states that ferry services are suspended for 20 and 21 October. It also says sightseeing cruise tickets are unavailable and describes morning and evening commuter bus replacement between Seacombe and Hamilton Square. No confirmed resumption date appears in that notice.

That does not establish what will happen on Friday 23, Saturday 24 or Sunday 25. The commuter bus notice should not be taken as a promise of a Sunday ferry replacement bus, either: the operator describes it specifically as an AM/PM commuter service. Check the ferry's fresh notice before leaving Seacombe or buying a cruise ticket.

If there is still no ferry, plan the cross-river trip using the Merseytravel journey planner, taking Sunday's Wirral rail replacement arrangements into account. For the reason behind the suspension and the Royal Daffodil's status, read our separate Mersey Ferries report.

River of Light road closures, 5pm–9pm nightly

Liverpool City Council says Dale Street will close to general traffic from Byrom Street to the junction of Water Street and The Strand between 5pm and 9pm each evening from 23 October to 1 November. It also names Lower Castle Street, Fenwick Street, Rumford Street, Covent Garden, Drury Lane and Tower Gardens as affected side streets. Signed diversion routes will be in place.

The closures are needed because some of the 13 River of Light installations sit near the carriageway. The festival is free and runs 5pm–9pm, including Sunday 25 October. See Liverpool City Council's dated closure announcement and our Water Street road-closure guide.

Bus diversions: Merseytravel has a separate notice affecting certain morning journeys during the installation and removal closure on 18–20 October and 2–3 November. That does not automatically mean those exact diversions apply on 23–25 October. Check current bus travel updates for your service instead of relying on the earlier list.

Travelling to the waterfront or King's Dock

If you arrive by rail replacement bus at Moorfields, allow a walk to the waterfront artworks, Royal Albert Dock or M&S Bank Arena. The organiser says Queen Square bus station and Merseyrail city-centre stations are within walking distance of many installations on ordinary service days, but Sunday 25 October is not an ordinary rail service day.

The official River of Light map shows 13 works over an approximately 5km route; choose a section near your arrival point rather than promising children a short waterfront loop. For step-free routes and ground surfaces, consult the official accessibility guide. Blue Badge holders should be aware that the Water Street bays are inside the nightly road closure; the organiser also lists accessible parking at Princes Dock and Royal Albert Dock's Gower Street car park, subject to availability and charges.

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October

The UK changes from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time when clocks go back one hour at 2am on Sunday 25 October. Check your phone or travel planner displays the correct time, particularly for an early train or replacement bus. GOV.UK confirms the clock-change date.

What to check before you leave

Use Merseyrail service updates for departures and any changes to replacement bus arrangements. Check Mersey Ferries for a fresh dated service notice, Merseytravel for bus diversions and the event map for your nearest installation. Our 23–25 October weekend guide lists the events these journeys connect to.
