Major roadworks and closures across Liverpool this week are causing delays on key commuter routes, including Regent Road at the north docks, Cook Street in the commercial district, and overnight closures on Walton Breck Road near Anfield.

If it feels as though you cannot get across Liverpool at the moment without meeting a set of temporary lights, cones or a diversion sign, there is a reason.
Several substantial road schemes are running at the same time across the city, while shorter closures are continuing around the city centre, north Liverpool, Wavertree and the waterfront.
Some of the disruption from last weekend has now finished, but there are several new closures to add to the list.
The one worth knowing about tonight is at Upper Parliament Street and the St James junction, where evening closures begin on Wednesday 30 September. Cook Street remains closed in the city centre, Regent Road is still affected, Kings Parade remains shut at the waterfront and long-running work continues around Wavertree and Anfield.

Upper Parliament Street and St James junction closes tonight
One of the most useful changes to know about this week starts on Wednesday 30 September.
The Upper Parliament Street and St James junction will close between 7pm and 3am on a series of evenings.
The currently scheduled dates are:
- Wednesday 30 September
- Thursday 1 October
- Monday 5 October
- Tuesday 6 October
- Wednesday 7 October
- Thursday 8 October
- Monday 12 October
- Tuesday 13 October
The closure affects a substantial number of bus routes, including the 26, 27, 82, 82A, 204, 500 and X4.
Diversions take buses away from parts of St James Place, Great George Street, Park Place and surrounding roads, depending on the service.
If you normally drive between the city centre, Princes Road, Park Road and south Liverpool through this junction in the evening, this is one to plan around.
Cook Street remains closed in Liverpool city centre
Cook Street has been closed since Monday 21 September and the closure is expected to last for approximately 19 days.
That puts the scheduled end at around Friday 9 October, although roadwork dates can move.
The closure continues to affect several services coming into Liverpool from Wirral.
Services 407, 437, 432, 433, 464, 471 and 472 are affected.
Inbound buses are currently terminating at Whitechapel rather than continuing through Dale Street, North John Street, Lord Street, Castle Street and Cook Street.
Outbound journeys start from Sir Thomas Street instead.
For drivers, it is another reason to expect changes around the Castle Street, Victoria Street and Dale Street side of the city centre. For a wider picture of route changes, see our Liverpool bus changes guide.
Kings Parade is still closed at the waterfront
The closure of Kings Parade remains in place this week.
The waterfront road closed on Sunday 20 September for approximately 14 days because of an event at the Arena and Conference Centre, putting the expected reopening around the weekend of 3 to 4 October.
Services 4 and 4A are being diverted via Wapping, Chaloner Street and Sefton Street.
That means the buses are currently avoiding Strand Street, Hartley Quay, Salthouse Quay, Gower Street, Kings Parade and Mariners Wharf on journeys from Liverpool ONE.
Anyone heading towards King's Dock, the Baltic Triangle or the southern waterfront should continue to expect the altered road layout for the remainder of the working week.
Regent Road closure continues
Regent Road between Saltney Street and Dublin Street has been closed since Monday 21 September.
Merseytravel said the closure would last for approximately 12 days, taking it through to around Friday 2 October.
Services 2, 800 and 838 are affected.
The service 2 diversion is particularly substantial, using New Quay, King Edward Street, Leeds Street, Vauxhall Street, Boundary Street and Blackstone Street instead of its normal waterfront route.
The 800 and 838 are also diverted away from parts of Regent Road.
Regent Road closes again on Sunday
There is another closure to watch immediately afterwards.
Regent Road is due to close between 6am and midday on Sunday 4 October for the Everton 10K.
Service 2 will again be diverted, avoiding St Nicholas Place, Princes Parade, William Jessop Way, Waterloo Road and Regent Road.
Drivers heading towards the north docks or the stadium area on Sunday morning should allow extra time.
Commercial Road has overnight closures
There are also overnight restrictions around Kirkdale.
Commercial Road, northbound between Garage Slip Road and Stanley Road, is scheduled to close for approximately four nights from Monday 28 September.
The closure operates between 8pm and 5am.
Services 54, 54A and 56 are affected, with buses diverted through Lambeth Road and Stanley Road.
This is primarily an evening and overnight issue rather than an all-day closure, but it could catch drivers travelling through north Liverpool after work or later at night.
Richard Kelly Drive closed for around eight days
Another relatively new closure is Richard Kelly Drive, between Walton Hall Avenue and Utting Avenue.
It closed on Monday 28 September for approximately eight days.
Bus services 214 and 215 are diverted using Walton Hall Avenue, Queens Drive and Utting Avenue, with Richard Kelly Drive omitted.
That places another restriction close to already busy routes through north Liverpool and around Queens Drive.
Wellington Road remains closed in Wavertree
The larger Wavertree High Street improvement programme is continuing.
Wellington Road is closed at its junction with Picton Road, with Merseytravel listing the closure from 1 September for approximately 46 days.
Services 60, 204 and 619 are being diverted.
Liverpool City Council says the work forms part of improvements around Wavertree High Street and Picton Road.
The programme includes new pedestrian crossings, resurfacing and traffic-signal improvements along the corridor. The current phase around Wellington Road and Picton Road is expected to continue into October.
This is one of the more important ongoing schemes for anyone regularly travelling between Wavertree, Old Swan, Smithdown and the city centre.
Walton Breck Road restrictions continue into 2027
The roadworks around Anfield are not a short-term closure.
Major improvement works are continuing on Walton Breck Road and Oakfield Road, with the overall scheme expected to continue until March 2027.
The current traffic arrangement includes restrictions between Sleepers Hill and Kemp Avenue.
Merseytravel says the eastbound side is closed as part of the regeneration works, with changes affecting routes 17, 17A, 17X, 26, 27, 68, 68A, 68B and 68E.
Liverpool City Council says the wider work includes resurfacing, upgraded pedestrian crossings, improved bus stops and changes to surrounding streets.
Walton Breck Road is generally operating one way during the relevant phase, with traffic permitted towards the city centre.
The restrictions also combine with the usual matchday traffic management around Anfield. Our Anfield matchday note covers the general layout of the area.
If Walton Breck Road forms part of your normal route, it is worth treating this as a long-term change rather than a temporary weekly closure.
St Nicholas Place is still shut
One of Liverpool's longest-running current diversions remains at St Nicholas Place, beside the Pier Head.
The road has been closed since 26 May and Merseytravel continues to list it as closed until further notice.
Service 2 is diverted via New Quay, King Edward Street, Great Howard Street and Paisley Street, avoiding St Nicholas Place, Princes Parade and William Jessop Way.
The combination of this closure with works further north on Regent Road means bus journeys along the waterfront can look substantially different from their usual route.
Speke Boulevard closes overnight on Friday
Drivers in south Liverpool should also note a closure coming at the end of the week.
Speke Boulevard eastbound, between Woodend Avenue and the Higher Road bridge, is due to close on Friday 2 October from 7pm until 5am the following morning.
Services 3A and X4 will be diverted.
Traffic will instead be directed through roads including Woodend Avenue, Hillfoot Avenue and Higher Road.
Anyone travelling towards the airport, Speke or the A561 on Friday evening should check their route before leaving.
What has changed since our last roadworks update?
Several restrictions included in our previous weekend update were connected to events taking place on 26 and 27 September or to works that have since ended.
The most significant additions now are:
- Upper Parliament Street / St James junction, beginning tonight.
- Richard Kelly Drive, which closed on Monday.
- Commercial Road overnight closures in Kirkdale.
- Speke Boulevard, which closes eastbound on Friday night.
- Regent Road on Sunday morning, because of the Everton 10K.
Merseytravel's live list also continues to show Cook Street, Kings Parade, Regent Road, St Nicholas Place, Town Row, Walton Breck Road and Wellington Road as active Liverpool disruptions.
Which areas are likely to be most awkward?
For the next few days, there are several obvious clusters to check before travelling.
- City centre and waterfront: Cook Street, Kings Parade and St Nicholas Place.
- North Liverpool: Regent Road, Commercial Road, Richard Kelly Drive and Walton Breck Road.
- Wavertree and east Liverpool: Wellington Road and the wider Picton Road improvement scheme.
- South Liverpool: Upper Parliament Street and St James junction in the evenings, followed by the Speke Boulevard closure on Friday night.
There is no single diversion that avoids all of them. Depending on where you are travelling from, moving from one busy corridor to another can simply move you into a different set of works.
Check before you leave
Roadwork permits show the period during which work is authorised or expected to take place. They do not guarantee that a road will remain closed for every minute of that period.
Jobs can finish early, dates can move because of weather or engineering problems, and emergency utility works can appear with little warning.
Before setting off:
- Check the live roadworks map for the road itself.
- Check Merseytravel travel updates if you use buses.
- Allow additional time if your route takes you through Wavertree, Anfield, Kirkdale or the city centre.
