Halloween with a five-year-old needs a different idea of scary. Liverpool has a Halloween trail you can walk along the waterfront, a pumpkin patch to pick from and an under-5s party at the Palm House, all inside one half-term.

This guide concentrates on children's Halloween events around Liverpool that are fun first and frightening second, with practical notes on age, scare level, price, buggies and booking.

Liverpool City Council lists 2026 autumn half-term as Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, before Halloween on Saturday 31 October. Check your own school's dates too.

Is it actually scary?

L1Local uses a simple 0 to 4 scare scale in this guide. It is an editorial comparison, not an official venue rating.

0/4 means pumpkins and crafts with no meaningful scare content. 1/4 means friendly ghosts, characters or Halloween decoration. 2/4 means darker spaces, mild surprises or louder effects. 3/4 is approaching a proper scare attraction. 4/4 is outside the scope of this children's guide. Children who dislike mascots, sudden noise or dim rooms may still prefer the 0/4 and 1/4 options.

For a zero-scare option, Rainfords Farm near St Helens has no entry fee and no booking for general pumpkin picking. Pumpkins start from £1.50, parking is free and pumpkins are brought to an enclosed grass area beside the barn. Café service can vary in pumpkin season. See Rainfords Farm pumpkin picking.

At Gordale Garden & Home Centre in Burton, South Wirral, the Pumpkin Patch Trail runs 17 to 31 October, 9am to 5pm. It costs £5 per child, including a trail sheet and pumpkin, with no advance booking. See Gordale's Pumpkin Patch Trail.

Both are 0/4. Rainfords is mainly pumpkin choosing; Gordale adds a character trail and code-solving activity.

Free and low-cost Halloween activities

National Museums Liverpool provides lower-cost half-term options. Spooky Sudley on 30 and 31 October includes crafts, face painting and object handling. At World Museum on 28 October, an all-ages family workshop introduces traditional Mexican Day of the Dead dance. Check the National Museums Liverpool What's On page for live booking details.

For more non-Halloween ideas, L1Local's free things to do in Liverpool and Merseyside guide is useful for filling the rest of half-term without buying another event ticket.

Rainy-day Halloween activities

Indoor choices include Little Liverpool, Dobbies Little Scare-lings, Halloween at the Storybarn and the Palm House parties. World Museum is another indoor fallback. Otterspool is mixed indoor/outdoor, while Spooky Welly Walk runs in rain unless severe weather forces a change.

You can also use L1Local's family days out in Liverpool without overplanning for non-Halloween alternatives if plans change.
