Christmas Lights in Liverpool & Merseyside 2026: Switch-Ons, Free Displays and Magical Trails
Where to see Christmas lights in Liverpool and Merseyside in 2026: Liverpool ONE's walk-through tree, switch-on dates, free displays and ticketed light trails.
There's a moment every November when Merseyside starts looking different. The lights go up over Liverpool's shopping streets, trees appear in town squares, and suddenly everyone's hunting for their gloves.
This year brings a 30-metre walk-through Christmas tree at Liverpool ONE, glowing animals at Knowsley Safari, a light-and-sound show inside Liverpool Cathedral and an early switch-on party in Southport. Beyond the big names, we're following the town-centre switch-ons across Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Halton.
You don't need to spend a fortune. Often a good plan is to wrap up warm, wander through the lights, grab something hot and head home before anyone complains about their feet. If you want to make a night of it, the ticketed trails are below too, with dates, prices and booking links. We'll keep this guide updated as organisers announce more.
Last checked: 18 October 2026. Where a place says date to be announced, it means no 2026 date has been published yet, not that the event is cancelled.
Liverpool: a free Christmas lights wander
Liverpool ONE: the new 30-metre tree
This year's big arrival is a 30-metre Christmas tree at Paradise Place that you can walk through. From Friday 6 November, Liverpool ONE is also putting up a canopy of lights across Peter's Lane and Keys Court, a light curtain at the Church Street and Keys Court entrance, and a light drape with a giant suspended bauble at Peter's Square. The reindeer, angel wings and bauble arch are back too.
It's an easy free option. Take the kids for the decorations, get your photos, and leave before anyone suggests another shop. Or make an afternoon of it: the Christmas Toy Parade, with Walk The Plank, is on Saturday 14 November, and Wishmas brings a free day of festive entertainment on Saturday 5 December.

Bold Street, Hope Street and the business district
Liverpool BID says it is funding 85% of the city centre's Christmas lights and decorations in 2026, across Hope Street, Hardman Street, Bold Street, Church Street and its side streets, Williamson Square, Lime Street, Castle Street, Derby Square, Old Hall Street and St Paul's Square. It hasn't published a switch-on time for these streets.

Our suggested route: start at Lime Street, stroll along Church Street and through Liverpool ONE, then finish with a hot drink. For a longer walk, add Bold Street and Hope Street. It's free, and you can stop whenever little legs have had enough. If you're combining it with the markets, our Liverpool Christmas markets guide has the stalls and dates.

Noël at Liverpool Cathedral: Christmas on the ceiling
27 November to 5 December 2026. Liverpool Cathedral's Noël light-and-sound show is by Luxmuralis, created especially for the cathedral, turning its vast stone interior into a canvas of projections, music and Christmas storytelling. A new artwork, Constellation, made with sculptor Peter Walker, hangs thousands of paper stars carrying messages written by visitors, families and schoolchildren.
On Ticket Quarter, off-peak tickets are £10.50 for adults, £8.50 for children aged 3 to 15 and £29.50 for a family of four, rising to £12.50, £10.50 and £36 at peak times. Under-3s and carers go free, and an administration fee is added. A quiet show runs on Wednesday 2 December, 4.30pm to 5pm, with reduced capacity and lower music levels. This is the pick if you want a light show without gambling on Merseyside weather. Cathedral visitor information.

Sefton: Southport, Formby, Hightown, Crosby and Bootle
Southport: The Grand switches on, 7 November
Southport starts early. The Grand holds its Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday 7 November, with free entertainment outside from 3pm to 7pm on a stage run by Regally Royal Parties. Father Christmas arrives with special guests to switch on the lights, and live singers and Southport Wellbeing Choir perform festive songs and carols, according to The Guide Liverpool. No exact switch-on time has been published.
It's the one to pick if you want an event rather than just decorations. Pair it with a wander along Lord Street, but don't assume every other Southport display switches on the same day.

Formby: Thursday 19 November
Formby Parish Council, which runs the event, approved spending in July for the village Christmas lights switch-on on Thursday 19 November 2026, Southport Today reports from the council's minutes. The running order and switch-on time haven't been announced. In 2024 the lights went on at 7pm, but don't plan around that until the 2026 times are out.
Santa's Secret Forest, near Hightown: a whole Christmas outing
21 November to 24 December 2026. On Orrell Hill Lane (L38 5DA), Santa's Secret Forest combines a half-kilometre illuminated woodland trail of about 30 minutes with an indoor Santa's Hub experience of about an hour and the Merrywood Market for food, drink and marshmallow toasting. The organiser says to allow two to two and a half hours.
This is for families who want a big Christmas trip rather than a quick free walk. It's ticketed, so check the package, total price, age suitability and availability before promising the children anything.
Crosby, Waterloo, Bootle and Maghull
Date to be announced. We'll add each town's switch-on as organisers publish dates, places and times. Until then, don't plan a journey around an old social media poster.
Knowsley: Enchanted, plus the town centres
Enchanted at Knowsley Safari: 20 November to 23 December
This is the big paid outdoor light trail.Enchanted returns to Knowsley Safari on selected dates from 20 November to 23 December 2026, with an extended trail through the Foot Safari, light displays and glowing animal installations.
Tickets start at £9.95, but refreshments, rides and Santa's Grotto cost extra, so budget for more than the headline price. Book before 1 November and marshmallow toasting is included with every ticket. New for 2026 is an Enchanted SEN Night, a quieter, more relaxed evening for families of children with additional needs; the date is on the booking page.
Prescot, Huyton and Kirkby
Date to be announced for all three town-centre switch-ons. We'll add them when they're confirmed, so check back in November.
Wirral: Birkenhead, New Brighton, West Kirby, Hoylake and Heswall
Wirral's lights are usually organised town by town, so there's no single switch-on for the peninsula. We're following Birkenhead, New Brighton, Wallasey, West Kirby, Hoylake, Heswall, Bebington and Bromborough, and will add dates as each town announces them.

Coming over to Liverpool's lights? The Wirral Line is easier than parking in town, but check late trains before you set off on Merseyrail. Local buses also change on 25 October, so our Wirral bus changes guide has the new route numbers.
St Helens and Earlestown
St Helens and Earlestown both held Light Up the Square events in 2025, with music, markets, family entertainment and tree lights. The 2026 dates are still to be announced. Keep an eye on Church Square and Victoria Square in St Helens and Earlestown town centre, and on St Helens Borough Council news.
Halton: Runcorn and Widnes
Runcorn and Widnes are part of the Liverpool City Region too. Plans for Runcorn Shopping City, Runcorn town centre and Widnes are still to be announced for 2026; Visit Halton is the place to watch.
Make an evening of it without making it expensive
The simplest money-saving plan: pick one area, go after dark, and don't let it turn into an accidental shopping trip. Bring a flask, warm layers and gloves. A packet of biscuits may do more for family morale than another £8 hot chocolate.

By train, Merseyrail advertises off-peak Day Savers from £4.80 and a £14 family ticket for up to five people, valid off-peak and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. Check your route if you're travelling during engineering work or staying out late.
Liverpool BID's Get In! scheme offers free car parking, bus, train and ferry tickets on the four Sundays before Christmas: 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December. There are 500 tickets each Sunday, and booking opens at 10am on Friday 20 November.

Are there sensory-friendly Christmas light events on Merseyside?
Yes. Liverpool Cathedral's Noël has a quiet show on Wednesday 2 December from 4.30pm to 5pm, with reduced capacity and lower music levels. Knowsley Safari has a new SEN Night for Enchanted in 2026; check its booking page for the date.
