Free Christmas outings are already confirmed across Liverpool and Merseyside for 2026, including a toy parade, festive choirs, children's craft workshops and a walk-through Christmas tree. You can also explore seasonal markets without paying to get in, although skating, rides, food and presents are extra.
The trick is knowing which attractions are genuinely free, and which ones are only free to enter. This guide separates the two, with dates, locations and booking details checked against organisers' announcements on 26 October 2026.
Free Christmas lights and entertainment in Liverpool
1. Walk through Liverpool ONE's new 30-metre Christmas tree
When: From Friday 6 November 2026 Where: Paradise Place and across Liverpool ONE Cost: Free to see; no ticket required for the decorations
Liverpool ONE is installing a new 30-metre Christmas tree at Paradise Place, with a walk-through centre. It forms part of a larger display including a canopy of lights at Peter's Lane and Keys Court, a curtain of lights by Church Street, decorations at Peter's Square, and returning reindeer, angel wings and the bauble arch.
You don't have to buy anything to follow the displays. For families with younger children, making a game of spotting the different decorations is a straightforward alternative to a paid light trail.

2. See Liverpool's wider city-centre Christmas lights
When: Switch-on confirmed for Thursday 12 November 2026; exact time not yet published Where: Church Street, Bold Street, Hope Street, Lime Street, Castle Street and other city-centre streets Cost: Free to see
Liverpool ONE's decorations start on 6 November, but the wider city-centre lights have a separate switch-on date. Liverpool Business Improvement District confirms 12 November for the wider display. Its lit areas also include Williamson Square, Derby Square, Hardman Street, Old Hall Street and St Paul's Square.
You can make an evening of the lights without buying a ticket. Start on Church Street, go through Liverpool ONE, then wander up towards Bold Street and the illuminated streets nearby. If you want quieter photographs, pick a weekday evening rather than the busiest weekend shopping periods.
The organiser has not yet published an exact switch-on time, so don't head in expecting a timed stage show until details are confirmed.
When: Saturday 14 November 2026 Where: Liverpool ONE, city centre Cost: Free
Liverpool ONE's Christmas Toy Parade returns in partnership with street-theatre company Walk the Plank. The organiser promises dancing toys, festive characters and Santa in a procession through the shopping district.
This is one of the more substantial free children's events announced so far. Families can watch the parade without booking a paid Santa visit. The exact start time and parade route have not yet been confirmed, so check the organiser's page before travelling and allow time for crowds.
When: Thursdays throughout December 2026; individual performance times to be confirmed Where: Liverpool ONE Cost: Free
Liverpool ONE says its Festive Thursdays will bring live entertainment, along with Christmas performances by local charity and community choirs. It's an option for people who want festive music without paying for a concert.
The programme has been announced, but the specific choirs, performance locations and times are not yet listed. Check them before arranging a trip around an individual performance.
5. Spend a free Saturday at Liverpool ONE's new Wishmas
When: Saturday 5 December 2026 Where: Liverpool ONE Cost: Free entertainment; conditions may apply to prize activities
Liverpool ONE is introducing Wishmas, a day of free festive entertainment hosted by Jay Hynd and Gemma Cutting. The organiser also advertises opportunities to win prizes.
That makes 5 December a particularly useful date for families: you can combine Wishmas with the decorations, then walk to the Bluecoat or the Basnett Street market nearby. Prize terms and the full schedule were not available when this guide was checked.
6. Make Christmas decorations at The Beatles Story
When: 18–27 December 2026, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day Time: 10am–3pm Where: Discovery Zone at The Beatles Story, Royal Albert Dock Cost: Free; the main museum is separately ticketed
This is a proper free activity rather than a shopfront display. The Beatles Story confirms drop-in Christmas workshops for children, including festive colouring, bauble making and a music-tree activity.
The museum says its Discovery Zone is free to enter, so families can attend the workshops without purchasing admission to the main Beatles exhibition. That is particularly useful during the school holidays, when the cost of several attraction tickets can quickly add up.
Workshops run between 10am and 3pm, and the venue is closed on 25 and 26 December. Check the details before setting off in case capacity or arrangements change.

7. Follow the Bluecoat's free Winter Garden Trail
When: 17 October 2026–3 January 2027 Advertised time: 11am–5pm; check festive opening days Where: Bluecoat Garden, School Lane, Liverpool L1 3BX Cost: Free; suitable for all ages
The Bluecoat's winter trail has been created by artists from Blue Room, its inclusive arts project. Pick up a free trail sheet from the Children's Corner and search the garden for details inspired by its winter plants and wildlife.
It's a quieter option than a parade or Christmas market. The Bluecoat lists the trail until 3 January, but normal gallery hours and Christmas holiday opening days are not necessarily the same, so confirm access if you're planning to go between Christmas and New Year.
8. Browse handmade gifts at the Bluecoat Arts Market
When: Saturday 5 December 2026, 11am–4pm Where: Bluecoat, School Lane Cost: Free entry; items are priced individually
The Bluecoat's December market brings local artists and makers into its new event space to sell handmade work. It's free to browse, even if you don't buy a present.
This is a practical stop on a free Saturday in the centre: the market runs on the same day as Wishmas and the Basnett Street artisan market.
When: Saturdays 7 November, 21 November and 5 December 2026, 10am–6pm Where: Basnett Street, between Church Street and Williamson Square Cost: Free to browse; shopping and food cost extra
Liverpool City Council lists three late-2026 market dates for Basnett Street. The market brings together independent traders selling gifts, jewellery, handmade items and food.
If you're already in town for the Christmas lights, you can see the stalls without committing to a costly attraction. The dates above are confirmed by the council, unlike the Christmas schedules of some other pop-up markets which are still being announced.
10. Watch the free outdoor entertainment at The Grand
When: Saturday 7 November 2026, 3pm–7pm Where: Outside The Grand, Lord Street, Southport Cost: Free outdoor entertainment; separate indoor evening event is ticketed
The Grand's outdoor Christmas celebrations have been advertised with performances on a stage outside the building, appearances by Santa and his elves, live singers, and Southport Wellbeing Choir.
There is an important distinction here. The outdoor entertainment is free, but The Grand's indoor evening event with a meal and Rat Pack tribute is ticketed. Don't confuse the two when choosing where to spend the afternoon.
The free outdoor programme has been reported by The Guide Liverpool, while The Grand's own site lists its separately ticketed evening event. Recheck the outdoor running order before travelling.

11. Southport Christmas Spectacular
When: Saturday 14 November 2026, 11am–4pm Where: Lord Street Bandstand and outside The Vincent Hotel, Southport Cost: Free
Southport BID has confirmed a free family day with live performances at Lord Street Bandstand and activities outside The Vincent Hotel. The announced programme includes local dance schools, choirs, Marshside Brass Band, character appearances, children's Christmas crafts, face painting and a snow-globe photo opportunity.
With several activities in one area, families can choose what to see rather than buying separate attraction tickets. The organiser says more detail is still to come, so treat the published programme as subject to change.
12. Try Southport's Christmas Tree Pixel Challenge
When: From Saturday 14 November 2026 Where: Town Hall Gardens, Southport Cost: No admission price advertised for the outdoor challenge
Southport's official Christmas guide describes a new activity built around the large illuminated tree in Town Hall Gardens. Press a button to start the challenge, then count festive images as animations appear across the tree.
It's another way to give children something to do on a Christmas lights walk. Full operating details have not yet been published, so don't assume the game runs continuously or that every other festive display starts on the same day.

Christmas markets that are free to enter, but not free to do everything
Skate St George's, opposite Lime Street
When: 21 November 2026–3 January 2027 Where: St George's Plateau Site entry: Free Extra cost: Ice skating, rides, food and drinks
You can visit the Christmas market, walk among the stalls and see the planned entertainment without paying an entry fee. But the ice rink is a separate paid activity. Liverpool BID lists adult skating from £11.50, with the amount dependent on the session and ticket selected.

Liverpool Christmas Wonderland at the Pier Head
When: 20 November 2026–3 January 2027 Where: Pier Head waterfront Site entry: Free Extra cost: Ice skating, Santa's grotto, rides, games, food and drinks
The new waterfront winter attraction has a covered ice rink, rides, games and food stalls. You can enter the site and see the atmosphere without a ticket, but the main activities are chargeable. The organiser's website lists skating from £15.50 for adults and £12.50 for children, with higher-priced options possible.
It isn't a free Santa visit or a free skating session. Families looking for a no-spend day should treat it as a walk-through attraction rather than a full afternoon of activities.
A city-centre Christmas outing that doesn't need an attraction ticket
For a daytime visit, start at Lime Street and look around St George's Plateau once the market opens on 21 November. Follow Church Street towards the Christmas lights, turn into Basnett Street on one of its market Saturdays, and continue through Liverpool ONE to see the new tree and decorations.
On Saturday 5 December, you can combine the Basnett Street market, the Bluecoat Arts Market and Liverpool ONE's Wishmas. The Bluecoat Winter Garden Trail is another free stop, subject to its opening arrangements. All are in the central shopping area, so there is no need to drive between attractions.
For a different day out during the school holidays, head down to Royal Albert Dock for The Beatles Story's free Discovery Zone workshops on the advertised days between 18 and 27 December. This doesn't include the museum exhibition.
Bring your own drinks and snacks if you're trying to keep the whole visit free. Festive food stalls, gifts and transport are the expenses most likely to turn a £0 itinerary into a paid outing. Our family days out guide has more ideas for keeping a day in town simple.
Can you get into Liverpool for free on Sundays before Christmas?
Possibly, but you'll need to claim an eligible offer before it runs out. Liverpool BID's GET IN! scheme is offering limited free travel and parking allocations on Sunday 29 November and Sunday 6, 13 and 20 December.
The BID says there will be 500 free travel and parking tickets available per Sunday, across participating offers. Bookings are due to open at 10am on Friday 20 November. The offer covers selected transport and car parking options, not every train journey, bus ride or car park.
Tickets are first come, first served, and the scheme's terms restrict applications to eligible UK residents aged 18 and over. Check exactly what each ticket covers before relying on it. Your children may have different ticket requirements depending on the transport operator and offer.
For journeys around the city region, use the Merseyrail journey planner. The Hunts Cross–Liverpool Central tunnel works are scheduled to end on Friday 6 November, with normal service due to resume on Saturday 7 November, but service changes should still be checked on the travel date.
If you decide to pay for an extra festive experience

The free events above don't require an attraction ticket. If your family wants to add one paid activity, these are confirmed 2026 listings from established ticket sellers, rather than free events:
Santa's Secret Forest, Orrell Hill Woods: A ticketed woodland light-trail and Christmas experience running on selected dates from 21 November to 24 December. See dates and prices on Skiddle. For the December booking page checked on 26 October, the listed adult and child ticket category began at £58 before a booking fee; check the selected date and ticket category carefully. Infants under 12 months may enter free with a paying adult under the organiser's rules.
The Big Christmas Sing A-Long with Aled Jones and Alexander Armstrong: A ticketed Christmas concert at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall at 7pm on Thursday 10 December. See the Liverpool event on Ticketmaster. Ticket prices and availability vary.

Are there free Christmas carols at Liverpool Cathedral?
Liverpool Cathedral's Coffee and Carols page describes free entry without booking, with refreshments available to buy. However, when checked on 26 October, the Cathedral's live series page showed no scheduled events. We therefore haven't placed unverified December dates in the table above. Check the Cathedral's calendar before making a special journey.
More free local church services, library events and community switch-ons may be announced during November. We will add them only once there is an organiser-confirmed date and access information.
